Monthly Footfall Overview: July 2025

Summer events drive footfall trends in July, while year-on-year figures remain high

05/08/2025

Following our investment in Micro Location insights via O2/Virgin Media, two sensors have been installed on Victoria Street and Park Street, allowing us to better understand footfall trends across the city.

July saw a plethora of cultural activity across the city, including Bristol Pride, Bristol Harbour Festival, and Siren Festival all taking place throughout the month.

July experienced a slight decrease in footfall compared to June. Despite this, year-on-year footfall remains high. Compared to July 2024, visitors increased by 45% on Park Street and 637% on Victoria Street. This could be attributed to the consistent good weather we’ve experienced this summer, in combination with a large number of city-wide events and activity.

PARK STREET

OVERALL TRENDS*

Compared to June, footfall on Park Street decreased by 3%, with a 5% decrease in visitors, highlighting that the average number of visits per visitor decreased. The average daily visitor number in July was 14,224, compared to 15,351 in June.

Key trends included:

  • Summer events: The busiest days for footfall coincided with events taking place in the city. These included Saturday 12 July (Bristol Pride), Saturday 19 July (Bristol Harbour Festival), and Friday 25 July (Siren Festival).
  • Saturday impact: Saturdays remain the highest days for footfall. The weekly footfall patterns across July were consistent each week, with a notable spike on Saturdays.
  • International visits: There was a 47% increase in footfall from international visitors in July compared to June, with the largest number of visitors from Spain. As most countries have now started their summer holidays, this could account for the rise in visitors from overseas.

*Due to an issue with the Park Street sensor, there was a full loss of data on 10 July and a partial loss of data on 9 and 11 July. All figures above include the loss of data, where true figures would be slightly higher.

VISITOR DEMOGRAPHICS & BEHAVIOUR

  • A higher percentage of visitors were aged 18-64 compared to the national average, while fewer were 65+.
  • The most popular time to visit Park Street was from 1-5pm on Saturdays, with weekdays after work from 5-6pm. 19% of visits were made on Saturdays, despite Saturdays accounting for 13% of the month.
  • ‘Out of area’ visitors (those visiting rather than working or residing nearby) made up 74% of visits, up 4% from June. However, the percentage of Saturday visits made by ‘out of area’ visitors was 78%, showing those from out of the area were more likely to visit Park Street on the weekend, especially when city-wide events were taking place.
  • The average dwell time was 27 and a half minutes, similar to June.
  • 46% of visitors were female, compared to 51% nationally.

SPENDING POWER & TRAVEL PATTERNS

  • Compared to the UK average, Park Street visitors had a ‘high’ or ‘very high’ spend power.
  • The proportion of visitors with ‘mid’, ‘high’, and ‘very high’ spend power was higher in July than June.
  • When comparing the spending power of different categories of visitor, ‘residents’ had the highest average, followed by ‘visitors’ and then ‘workers’.
  • 57% of visitors made 1 visit, 36% made 2-5 visits, 5% made 6-10 visits, and 2% visited over 11 times. This aligns with the average number of visitors per person decreasing slightly from June to July.
  • The highest number of visitors came from BS8 postcodes, followed by BS6.
  • 63% of visitors came from the Bristol area, slightly lower than June. 3% came from both Bath and Gloucester postcodes.

VICTORIA STREET

OVERALL TRENDS*

Footfall on Victoria Street decreased by 69% from June to July, with a 50% decrease in visitors. This means the average visitor visited the area more frequently than in June. The average daily visitor number was 9,144 in July compared to 5,346 in June.

Key trends included:

  • High traffic days: The busiest days for footfall were Saturday 19 July and Thursday 10 July. The uplift on Saturday was likely driven by the nearby Bristol Harbour Festival, which took place on the Harbourside. Continuing the trend seen in June, local workers had a strong impact on weekday footfall, particularly as the Victoria Street sensor is located close to several offices. Almost every day in July recorded higher footfall than the same day in June.
  • International visits: There was a 70% increase from international visitors in July compared to June, with the largest number of visitors from Spain. As most countries will have started their summer holidays in July, this could account for the large increase in visitors from overseas.

*Due to an issue with the Victoria Street sensor, there was a full loss of data on 14 July and a partial loss of data on 13 and 15 July. All figures above include the loss of data, where true figures would be slightly higher.

VISITOR DEMOGRAPHICS & BEHAVIOURS

  • A higher percentage of visitors were aged 18-64 compared to the national average, while fewer were 65+.
  • The most popular time to visit Victoria Street was lunchtime (1-2pm) and after work (5-6pm) on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Saturday afternoons (2-4pm) were also popular. These trends can be attributed to the high number of office workers who work in the area. Overall, Sundays were the least popular days to visit Victoria Street.
  • The average dwell time was just under 31 minutes. This is around 5 minutes longer than in June.
  • 16% of visits were made on Saturdays, which accounted for 13% of the month. This shows that Victoria Street sees a more even spread of visitors throughout the week than Park Street.
  • 44% of visitors were female, compared to 51% nationally.
  • The percentage of ‘out of area’ visitors (those visiting rather than working or residing nearby) was 75%, down 1% from June.

SPENDING POWER & TRAVEL PATTERNS

  • Compared to the UK average, Victoria Street attracted a larger proportion of visitors with ‘high’ or ‘very high’ spend power.
  • The proportion of visitors with ‘very high’ and ‘high’ spend power was higher in July than in June.
  • When comparing the spending power of different categories of visitor, ‘visitors’ had the highest average spend power, followed by ‘residents’ and then ‘workers’.
  • 65% of visitors made 1 visit, 29% made 2-5 visits, 4% made 6-10 visits, and 2% made 11+ visits. This aligns with the average number of visitors per person decreasing slightly from June to July.
  • The highest number of visitors came from BS4 postcodes, followed by BS5.
  • 59% of visitors to Victoria Street came from the Bristol area, down 3% from June, possibly due to people travelling further afield over the summer. 5% came from Bath postcodes and 3% from Gloucester postcodes.
