Monthly Footfall Overview: June 2025

Year-on-year footfall figures surge for two of Bristol’s key areas

07/07/2025

Following our investment in Micro Location insights via O2/Virgin Media, two sensors have been installed on Victoria Street and Park Street, allowing us to better understand footfall trends across the city.

June experienced a slight decrease in footfall compared to May, but year-on-year trends remain high. Compared to June 2024, footfall has increased by 91% on Park Street and 342% on Victoria Street. The surge in figures year-on-year highlights growing engagement and movement in key areas of the city, likely reflected by local events and activations in the area and improved weather.

PARK STREET

OVERALL TRENDS

Compared to May, footfall on Park Street was down 12% with a 5% decrease in visitors. The daily average visitor number was 15,351 compared to 16,932 in May. Despite this slight decrease, year-on-year figures remain high, having almost doubled from 249,306 visits in June 2024 to 477,545 visits in June 2025.

Key trends included:

  • Seasonal events: The busiest days for footfall were Friday 13 and Saturday 14. 14 June had nearly 6,000 more visits than any other day in June. Over this weekend, both the Bristol Craft Beer Festival and Festival of Nature took place on the Harbourside nearby, likely contributing to the rise in footfall.
  • Saturday impact: Saturdays were the highest days for footfall, with consistent weekly footfall patterns emerging that highlight a notable spike on Saturdays.
  • International visits: There was a 2% increase in footfall from international visitors in June compared to May, with the largest number of visitors from Germany. This marks a change from the previous months in 2025, where most international visitors came from Spain.

VISITOR DEMOGRAPHICS & BEHAVIOUR

  • A higher percentage of visitors were aged 18-64 compared to the national average, while fewer were 65+.
  • The most popular time to visit Park Street was 2-5pm on Saturdays, with 5-6pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays also a popular time. 17% of visits were made on Saturdays despite Saturdays only accounting for 13% of the month.
  • ‘Out of area’ visitors (those visiting rather than working or residing nearby) made up 70% of visits, down 1% from May. However, the percentage of weekend visits made by ‘out of area’ visitors was 78%, showing those from out of the area were more likely to visit Park Street on the weekend.
  • ‘Workers’ (people whose location settings indicate they work and do not live around Park Street) were more than twice as likely to visit the area on a weekday than a weekend, showing that the demographic of visitors changes between weekdays and weekends.
  • The average dwell time was 27 and a half minutes, similar to May.
  • 45% of visitors were female, compared to 51% nationally.

SPENDING POWER & TRAVEL PATTERNS

  • Compared to the UK average, Park Street visitors had a ‘high’ or ‘very high’ spend power.
  • The proportion of visitors with ‘very low’ and ‘low’ spend power was higher in June than May.
  • When comparing the spending power of different categories of visitor, ‘residents’ had the highest average, followed by ‘visitors’ and then ‘workers’.
  • 54% of visitors made 1 visit, 37% made 2-5 visits, 6% made 6-10 visits, and 3% visited over 11 times. This aligns with a small decrease in average visits per visitor from May to June.
  • The BS8 postcode brought the highest number of visitors to Park Street, followed by BS6.
  • 64% of visitors came from the Bristol area, down slightly from May. 3% came from both Bath and Gloucester postcodes.

VICTORIA STREET

OVERALL TRENDS*

Footfall and visitor numbers both decreased by 16% from May to June. The daily average visitor number was 5,346 in June compared to 6,178 in May. Despite decreases month-on-month, year-on-year figures were more than four times as high, rising from 38,106 visits in June 2024 to 168,461 visits in June 2025.

Key trends included:

  • Seasonal events: The busiest days for footfall in June were Friday 13 and Saturday 14. Over this weekend, both the Bristol Craft Beer Festival and Festival of Nature took place on the Harbourside,  likely contributing to the rise in footfall, despite not being in the immediate vicinity.
  • Warm weather: Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 were also busy days for footfall. These were both hot, sunny days, with 19 June having a high of 29°C.
  • Weekday impact: Thursdays in June were the most popular day to visit Victoria Street, closely followed by Saturdays. Footfall on Thursdays is likely higher due to more workers visiting their offices on these days, as the Victoria Street sensor is located close to a dense area of office buildings. Sundays were the lowest days for footfall, with a significant drop in visits (not including the Sunday where the sensor was down).

*These figures include a partial loss of network on the Victoria Street data cell on Sunday 29 June and a full loss on Monday 30 June, meaning data could not be sent during that time. The actual decrease in footfall is likely to have been slightly smaller.

VISITOR DEMOGRAPHICS & BEHAVIOURS

  • A higher percentage of visitors were aged 18-54 compared to the national average, while fewer were 55+.
  • The most popular time to visit Victoria Street was lunchtime (1-2pm) and after work (5-6pm) on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Saturday afternoons (2-4pm) were also popular. 15% of visits were made on Saturdays, which accounted for 13% of the month. This shows that Victoria Street sees a more even spread of visitors throughout the week compared to Park Street.
  • June’s warm weather likely encouraged more people to spend time outdoors during lunchbreaks and after work in Castle Park nearby, which could explain some of the footfall trends on Victoria Street.
  • The average dwell time was just under 26 minutes, around the same as May.
  • 44% of visitors were female, compared to 51% nationally.
  • ‘Workers’ (people whose location settings indicate they work and do not live around Victoria Street) account for 13% of all footfall but were unlikely to visit the area at the weekend, accounting for only 4% of weekend visitors.
  • The percentage of ‘out of area’ visitors (those visiting rather than working or residing nearby) was 76%, an increase of 1% from May.

SPENDING POWER & TRAVEL PATTERNS

  • Compared to the UK average, Victoria Street attracted a larger proportion of visitors with ‘high’ or ‘very high’ spend power.
  • The proportion of visitors with ‘very high’ and ‘high’ spend power was lower in June than in May.
  • 70% of visitors made 1 visit, 26% made 2-5 visits, 3% made 6-10 visits, and 1% made 11+ visits, similar to May.
  • The BS4 postcode brought the highest number of visitors, followed by BS5.
  • 62% of visitors to Victoria Street came from the Bristol area, up 2% from May. 5% came from Bath postcodes and 2% from Gloucester postcodes.
  • There was a 10% decrease in international visitors in June, with the largest number of international visits made from Germany.
