Transport changes for Victoria Street to commence in 2025

Improvements include pavement widening, new public realm spaces and the addition of a segregated cycle lane.

Long awaited transport improvements on Victoria Street will commence in summer 2025 including pavement widening, new public realm spaces and the addition of a segregated cycle lane.

The proposed transport improvements along Victoria Street have been designed as part of the wider transport corridor along the A37/A4018 following the number 2 bus route.

The transport proposals for Victoria Street are shown on the below map and include:

  • Floating bus stop in front of the cycle lane on Victoria Street and pedestrian and cycle priority at Redcliff Street junction.
  • The right turn into Victoria Street from Counterslip junction would be removed and connection crossings for pedestrians and cyclists provided.
  • A cycle lane, continuous and new widened footways, with loading bays and disabled bays along with west side of Victoria Street.

  • Continuous footways and narrowing of junctions at Temple Street and Church Lane allowing for increased public space.
  • Reduce the existing outbound bus lane to reflect new low traffic street.

It is acknowledged that some car parking spaces have been removed to create space for the above proposals, as a result Bristol City Council have produced this map identifying all the existing car parking spaces adjacent to Victoria Street.

Following the closure of Bristol Bridge in September 2022, the bridge is no longer a route for general through traffic leading to significantly lower volumes of traffic. Work is currently taking place to remodel the Bristol Bridge junction and reallocate road space to pedestrians and cyclists, while providing a priority route for public transport between Temple Meads and the city centre.

CONSULTATION

Bristol City Council conducted consultation in September 2020 and January 2022 with an overwhelming majority of respondents supporting plans to prioritise walking and cycling on this route.

Redcliffe & Temple BID responded to the consultation in January 2022, the response is available below.
