We have added to ourwinter tree light project with new lights installed on Jacob Street and Portwall Lane and the return of last year’s popular tree lighting along Victoria Street and in Temple Gardens.

With the ambition of adding vibrancy and enhancing time spent in the city, the tree lighting will give autumn and winter late afternoons and evenings a warm glow for city centre commuters, visitors, and residents as they move through these the city.

Following the installation of lights in nine trees on Victoria Street’s in December 2021, we added illuminated fifteen trees in Temple Gardens with in October 2022 and set about searching for other locations where we could make a difference. Jacob Street and Portwall Lane were identified as key pedestrian and cycling routes where lighting the walkway would instil a feeling of safety during the darker evenings.

We’re really pleased with the feedback we’ve received about our winter tree lights with people commenting on the difference they have made to Victoria Street and Temple Gardens, we hope the additional lights installed this winter will have a similar impact on the two new locations.

STEVE BLUFF, HEAD OF REDCLIFFE & TEMPLE BID

We’re delighted to add two more locations to our popular winter tree lights project; we’ve received positive feedback from businesses and the wider community about our lights on Victoria Street and in Temple Gardens, highlighting how they have changed the look and feel of the street. We’re really pleased to have added these two sets of lights as part of wider improvements we’d like to implement in these two key locations.

The winter tree light installations will be switched on from 4pm to midnight each night from early October to end of March and will be a permanent fixture, using low energy LED lights, for years to come.

With Jacob Street forming a key part of the route to the Bristol to Bath Railway Path and Portwall Lane being the key route from Queen Square to Temple Meads these locations are being prioritised by the BID for improvements in the years to come. In February 2023 the BID was awarded Community Infrastructure Levy funding to improve the underpass at the end of Jacob Street and has applied for further funding to improve Portwall Gardens.
