Redcliffe & Temple BID mid-term survey analysis

An overview of findings from our mid-term survey

01/03/2024

From 7th September to 19th October 2023, we ran our mid-term survey over a 6-week period, generating 99 responses from over 56 companies in the BID area. This mid-term survey marked the midway point of Redcliffe & Temple BID’s first term, where we were actively seeking feedback from our business community on our performance to date. This was to gather insight into our BID delivery and to highlight improvements for future projects and priorities to deliver over the next two years.

The mid-term survey was shared to our business community via newsletters and social media channels, including LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter over this 6-week period.

The mid-term survey included questions relating to issues within the BID area, future projects and initiatives, area perceptions, and marketing, with opportunities to give further comments after each survey section.

AREA PERCEPTION

The mid-term survey gathered key insights into people’s perceptions of the area, where respondents were asked to rate how they felt about Redcliffe and Temple in terms of its desirability, enjoyability, safety, maintenance, and green spaces.

The data gathered highlighted that there is a general perception that Redcliffe and Temple is a pleasant and enjoyable area to work and spend time in, and that it is clean and well-maintained. However, there was a mixed response regarding people’s perceptions of sufficient green spaces to enjoy.

ISSUES WITHIN REDCLIFFE AND TEMPLE

We identified 13 issues within the survey where respondents were asked to rank each in relation to how big of an issue they currently pose within the BID area. The most significant issues identified included volume of traffic, rough sleeping, and begging. The least significant issues included theft, street cleanliness, and accessibility.

The mid-term survey also provided valuable feedback in relation to each of the BID themes. Key takeaways per theme are highlighted below.

CREATING AND MAINTAINING QUALITY SPACES

Several businesses are interested in supporting the development of green spaces within Redcliffe and Temple and integrating this into their corporate social responsibility work. We will continue developing opportunities where businesses can contribute, including further sustainability initiatives and volunteering opportunities through Neighbourly.

CREATING IMPROVING SUSTAINABILITY AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Members of our business community enjoy our Dr Bike service, which is increasingly popular, with sessions held twice a month at Glass Wharf and Left Handed Giant. Due to this level of popularity, we will continue these services and will increase capacity and frequency where possible.

We have received feedback regarding the corporate and concrete feel of the area. We will continue to work to improve this sense of place by improving the aesthetic of the area with murals, lights, and other public art or events where appropriate.

CREATING AND PROMOTING A VIBRANT PLACE

Feedback has highlighted a demand for increased awareness regarding key places to visit within Redcliffe and Temple including hidden points of interest. As a result, we will produce further content including blogs and communications around key places to visit and spend time within the BID area.

The survey identified a lack of knowledge regarding current green spaces within Redcliffe and Temple. We will ensure that green spaces in this area of the city are promoted to our business community, and we will provide opportunities where possible for businesses to be involved with their maintenance.

CONNECTING AND REPRESENTING BUSINESSES

Members of our business community enjoy the lunchtime, networking, and knowledge events that we deliver. We will continue to deliver these events in future and increase their capacity and frequency where possible.

The BID’s representation on various stakeholder groups and boards is highly valued and our position to provide influence or insight into various stakeholder groups is of great benefit. Moving forward, we will promote our position within these groups further.

Our business community requires further support with where to direct queries and issues. To improve this, we are creating a key contacts page on our website where businesses can find the correct information and where to direct their query or issue. This includes information regarding general enquiries, safety, business crime, street concerns, local councillors, cleansing, transport, and sustainability.

BUILDING A SAFE AND CARING COMMUNITY

Concerns have been raised regarding high levels of rough sleeping and begging in the area. We will continue to promote our links with the Street Intervention Service and ways that businesses can report instances of rough sleeping and begging. We will also encourage businesses to take on TAP for Bristol as their dedicated workplace charity, to help Bristol solve homelessness.
