Transport Update with an overview of the upcoming projects over the next two years

In June we were delighted to be able to host an update to discuss Bristol’s transport challenges and hear from Adam Crowther, Head of Strategic Transport for Bristol City Council on upcoming schemes and priorities.

These sessions are invaluable to provide our levy payers with information on in-progress and upcoming schemes and we will aim to repeat this session at least once a year if not more often.

Prior to Adam’s update we asked attendees to work together in small groups to identify some priorities we could work with Bristol City Council (BCC), West of England Combined Authority (WECA) and transport providers on to improve.

Priorities included an audit of key pedestrian routes, a pedestrian crossing on Redcliffe Way, signage and coloured cycle lanes, and simplification of information on bus routes and costs.

 

We are keen to work with Bristol City Council this year to influence the priorities and will feedback on our progress in due course.

Current and Upcoming Transport Projects 2023

  • Ecargo Bike Loans

    Cargo bikes are now available to borrow from Bristol City Council on medium term loans.

    Launching in Autumn this year, this key walking and cycling route alongside Cumberland Road will reopen following several years of repairs.

    In Autumn of this year, Tier will be delivering new E-Scooters, alongside e-bikes and 20 e-cargo bikes.

  • Queen Charlotte Street Cycle Lane

    This winter, a new cycle lane and raised crossing will be added to Queen Charlotte Street in addition to new cycle parking.

    This winter, a major redesign is taking place to make it much easier to cross and navigate on foot and by bike/scooter.

  • East Bristol Liveable Neighbourhood

    A trial of this scheme will commence in Winter 2023, using modal filters to remove through traffic from Barton Hill and St George, making it safer to walk and cycle.

    In the spring of 2024, data will be released following one year of its installation – this data will be analysed to assess impact on the city.

    In the summer of 2024, this cycling led scheme will make it easier and safer to connect from the Railway Path to Castle Park via Old Market.

    In the summer of 2024, a new pedestrian and cycling crossing at the junction with Avon Street will improve the link across Temple Way and reduce pressure on the Underpass.

    In the summer of 2024, this brand-new station will connect to the Bristol Parkway railway route.

    In the winter of 2024 work on major improvements to Victoria Street will commence including a new cycle lane, continuous crossings and new public realm spaces.

    In the winter of 2024, the current temporary cycle lanes will be made permanent with changes also made to Colston Street.

2025 and beyond

  • Strategic Corridors Programme

    Bristol City Council will continue to work with WECA on the Strategic Corridors Programme – proposals for the A4 (Portway) are under development and will come to consultation in Winter 2023.

  • Future Bus Route Plans

    Plans are developing for a bus route that will circulate the city centre meaning that North-South and East-West routes can carry straight through on the main corridors without taking a diversion.

  • Increased Mass transit options

    Mass transit options continue to be explored with funding from West of England Combined Authority being allocated to prioritise possible options, it is likely the mass transit solution will be a combination of underground and overground services.
